Prime Minister of Samoa imposes lockdown

After 15 passengers tested positive for COVID 19 on a flight from Australia, the Prime Minister of Samoa imposed a 48-hour ban on the small Pacific nation. The sick travelers were among the 73 passengers that landed on Wednesday from Brisbane. On Saturday, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa indicated the government would cancel further flights from Australia. Scheduled flights from New Zealand on Saturday have already been postponed, according to Radio New Zealand. Prior to departure, all passengers were apparently completely vaccinated and tested negative for COVID19. Governor Lemanu Parepoi Sialega “Peleti” Mauga of American Samoa has made a statement expressing Samoa’s sympathy and support for the Prime Minister. He also declared that a week-long flight between the territory and Samoa will be canceled. With a population of 200,000 people, Samoa has 18 current cases.
